...but
how are we, at Burnham Nurseries, doing our bit for the
environment?
Most of our plastic waste is sent for recycling
Most of the incoming packaging is reused or recycled
Most of our outgoing packaging is reusable, recyclable
or compostable
We pot our orchids in mostly pure chipped bark
so making us virtually peat-free. The bark is a by-product
of the forestry industry.
Some plant waste is composted rather than going
to landfill
Most of the nursery is now roofed with double
or triple thickness polycarbonate rather than glass so
giving extra insulation keeping the heat in in winter
and out in the summer
We keep the water at greenhouse temperature so
we are not watering with really cold water in the winter.
This is less of a shock to the plants and also helps to
keep the air temperature up and so reduces the heating
required.
We use natural gas to heat the greenhouses with
Radiant heating. This is very efficient form of heating
as it only heats what it touches not the air inbetween.
Regular misting in the summer keeps the humidity
high so the plants dry out more slowly and require less
water.
We use local suppliers whenever possible and
try to contact people by email or telephone rather than
post. This saves time as well as paper!
